app resources for marketing

Updated: March 30, 2016

We do our best to provide you with thorough and useful posts on the Apptamin App Marketing Blog 😉

But we definitely can’t cover everything and we’re certainly not experts in all domains.

Lots of people create awesome content, so here is a nice list of resources dealing with how to market your app. We actually follow others than these, but most of what we share on our Facebook page or Twitter account comes from there.

This list is meant to evolve, as some resources become more relevant. This post doesn’t cover the resources that deal with “Mobile News,” as these are pretty easy to find.

App Marketing Blog Resources

Let’s start with the blogs. We started the Apptamin App Marketing Blog back in April 2012 because we couldn’t really find blogs with useful and practical posts.

Since then, we’ve discovered a few ones that we really like and are updated frequently. My favorite way to keep up with these?

Feedly, for sure. Be sure to bookmark us, while you are at it 🙂

Gamasutra – The Art & Business of Making Games

Gamasutra blog

Gamasutra covers game development and the business of games, in general. Their smartphone/tablet section give some great insights to app developers about game development, marketing and crowdfunding.

They have TONS of post and it can be a little overwhelming. But it’s good stuff and there are very frequent posts from the community.

Some of the best posts are from game developers, sharing what they have learned from making a game. One of the best blogs in the industry, not to be missed.

Appboy Blog

Relate Magazine by Appboy

The folks at Appboy have really stepped things up and have rebranded their blog as Relate – The Digital Mag for Marketers. There is a ton of great app marketing information there and the design of the site is really nicely done.

Get tips deep linking, retention and more. They also share some of their personal experience, which is always great to see.

Tune Blog

Tune Blog

MobileDevHQ was purchased by TUNE (formerly HasOffers) and their content team has expanded, allowing them to publish great content more frequently. Since they are industry experts in several different areas, reading their blog will make you a much more well-rounded marketer.

Tapstream Blog

The Tapstream Blog

The Tapstream blog has a nice mix of blog posts, from app reviews and tips/resources for app marketing to interviews and debates. An easy, interesting read.

Apptweak Blog

AppTweak blog

The AppTweak team publishes thorough and interesting articles about app marketing and promotion, on their blog. Learn everything you need to know about ASO, beta testing and more.

Plus, they have free videos lessons in their ASO University.  It is a beginner’s guide to App Store Optimization that you should totally take advantage of.

On top of all that, it’s nice to hear more French accents in the app marketing world 🙂

Apptimize Blog

Apptimize

They don’t publish too often, but when they do, it’s usually great stuff. Learn about user onboarding, retention, A/B testing and much more.

Apptentive Blog

Apptentive Blog

The Apptentive team takes the time to produce actionable and interesting blog posts. They have a wide range of topics and the blog is worth following.

Mobile Marketer Blog

Mobile Marketer blog

Mobile Marketer is always worth a read because they usually feature specific case studies, instead of just general marketing advice. Granted, many of these case studies are of very large companies. But there is also a lot of great of information for smaller companies…and everyone in between.

Dan Counsell Blog

On his blog, Dan Counsell from Realmac Software (the team behind Clear, Ember, etc.) writes about launching apps and app marketing in general. Great content, from someone that’s actually building and launching apps.

App Store Optimization – Stefan Bielau’s Tumblr Blog

On his Tumblr blog, Stefan publishes short posts on app store optimization and app marketing: opinions, tips, but also links to case studies or other articles on the topic. Posts are published often (several times a week).

Arkenea – App Inspiration

App Marketing Podcasts

The nice thing about podcasts and audio in general is that you don’t need to be in front of a screen. You learn about app marketing while jogging, driving or kicking it on the beach.

App Marketing & Design Tips for iOS & Android

App Marketing Podcast Steve Young

On his podcast, Steve P. Young has invited many developers and mobile app experts. From ASO to validating ideas and of course top developers’ interviews (Tweetbot, Shazam, etc.), Steve has created an incredible amount of quality audio content for you to listen to. Great insights and interesting stories.

App Business Podcast

App Business Podcast

Chris and David have been publishing great podcasts frequently for awhile and are an institution in the app podcasting world. Catch their weekly industry updates and interviews with founders.

The App Guy Podcast

Paul Kemp has interviewed over 400 app founders and you can listen to his interviews here. He’s got 99 problems, but a shortage of episodes ain’t one.

Forums & Facebook Groups

iPhoneDevSDK (Promotion Techniques)

iphonedevsdk form

The Promotion Techniques section of the iPhoneDevSDK forum is not the most popular. Sometimes it suffers from a little too much self-promotion (I’m guilty too, although most of us do it to add value).

But it’s a great place to exchange some thoughts and techniques between indie developers. There are some interesting debates and insights from time to time.

TouchArcade (Game Developers)

TouchArcade Forum

If you develop games, you might prefer TouchArcade Forums. They feature both iOS and Android. Be sure to visit the Game Developers Forum to learn from other developers and help people out.

The forum is pretty active, so if you post something, you will probably get a reply.

App Entrepreneurs and Marketers Facebook Group

App Marketers

This Facebook group is a place where some really interesting articles are app marketing/business can be discussed. There are so many Facebook groups out there, but most of them are filled with spam.

This group actually has meaningful discussions from people who are actually making and marketing apps.

Bonus Groups

Quora is a great place to find relevant information and LinkedIn has some interesting groups.

Of course, following the right people on Twitter can help you discover great content. If you want to see who we follow, you can steal some (or all) of our lists here.

App Marketing Books

Since the “gold rush” of app development started, a lot of books have been written. That includes a lot of crappy ones. Here are a few that are really good reads.

Pitch Perfect – Practical Advice From Professional Bloggers

Pitching is an art, and a lot of developers and teams do it wrong. Even if you’ve been doing it for a while, it’s highly probable that you will learn a thing or two about how to pitch from Steven Sande and Erica Sadun (TUAW). The book is actually not only about pitching, but also about what makes a great app.

App Savvy – Ken Yarmosh

Of all the books on the subject I’ve read, App Savvy is my favorite. I think I really like it because the concept of Marketing Crescendo that Ken talks about really speaks to me. Ken had the good idea to include some interviews along the chapters. The book is from 2010, so it is quite old, but it has a lot of timeless marketing lessons.

The App Store Playbook

Like I said, I like interviews. This book by Shane Lee provides 10 mobile game developers interviews, giving you great insights into how they work and key points on how you can improve your chances for success. A must read if you develop games for iOS.

Webinars

Fiksu Webinars

I haven’t heard of many good webinars on app marketing. Even though it’s clear that there is a sales approach to the subjects treated (but one’s gotta live, right?) the Fiksu webinars are interesting, and it’s always nice to be able to ask questions at the end.

Here you are, several great resources about app marketing. If you’re not following us on twitter yet, now is a good time to start and discover the posts and resources we share everyday.

Do you know of some kind of incredible app marketing resource we’re not aware of? Please share it in the comments!
